GYNECARE THERMACHOICE offers a chance to end excessive periods

What is the Gynecare Thermachoice Uterine Balloon Therapy System?

It is a simple, one-time, minimally-invasive 30-minute outpatient treatment performed by Dr. Santiago that is usually a permanent solution for heavy periods. This type of endometrial ablation uses heat to treat the uterine lining. It requires no incisions and may be performed in our office under local anesthesia. Gynecare Thermachoice ablation is hormone free and unlike a hysterectomy it is allows you to retain your uterus and ovaries.

Are my periods normal?

The average period last 5-7 days, however you should talk to Dr Santiago if you are having periods heavier than you like or experience any symptoms such as:

Is an ablation the right choice for me?

Dr. Santiago will discuss all options to correct your bleeding and together develop a customized plan that will best fit your needs. If your pap smear and intrauterine biopsy (usually performed in our office) are normal and you wish to have no more children in the future, this is a good option to improve your condition. How does the GYNECARE THERMACHOICE ablation work?

  1. A small, soft flexible silicon balloon is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The balloon is then filled with fluid so that it inflates to the size and shape of your uterus.
  2. The fluid is heated and circulated for eight minutes treating the lining of the uterus.
  3. When the treatment is completed, the fluid is withdrawn and the balloon is removed. Nothing will remain in the uterus.

What will I feel during the procedure?

Dr. Santiago will provide medication for before, during and after the procedure as to minimize discomfort. An individualized plan will be customized to best meet your needs. When the procedure is performed in the office, local anesthesia is also used. There are some women who do experience menstrual-like cramping during the procedure. What can I expect after the procedure?

You may experience cramping, as with a period. Most women can return to work or normal activities the day after their procedure. You will likely experience spotting or pink watery discharge for a few weeks. Sexually activity may resume after your first check up (usually 7 days).
