Over–the–Counter Medications during your Pregnancy

The following over–the–counter medications (OTC) may be safely taken after 12 weeks gestation by a pregnant woman, following the directions on the container for appropriate dosage.

Problem OTC Precautions
Mild headaches/aches/pains Acetaminophen (Tylenol), Regular or extra strength Call if severe and/or persistent headaches.
Nasal congestion, sinusitis, allergies/cold symptoms Tylenol Cold or Tylenol Sinus, Sudafed, Ocean Nasal Spray, Benadryl Call if no improvement in 2-3 days or condition worsens.
Cough Robitussin (plain, no alcohol) Persistent cough
Sore throat, minor irritation Throat lozenges, Cepacol lozenges, Chloroseptic, salt water gargles Severe or persistent sore throat
Mild rashes/allergies Benadryl, Chlortrimeton, Caladryl/Calamine lotion, baking soda baths, corn starch, Aveeno lotion/bath
Diarrhea Kaopectate, Immodium, Clear liquids x 24 hours then BRAT diet (Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast), no dairy products For diarrhea that persists for more than 2 days and is accompanied by fever or severe diarrhea or blood, call provider.
Fever Acetaminophen, Tylenol regular or extra strength Call your provider if fever persists, (>101°Call if no reliefF) without relief with medication
Constipation Milk of Magnesia, Metamucil, Colace/ Pericolace, Increase fiber and fluids, exercise Avoid severe straining.
Hemorrhoids Tucks pads, Anusol, warm sitz baths 3 times daily, witch hazel pads Bleeding or severe pain
Heartburn/Indigestion Tums, Maalox/Mylanta, decrease caffeine and chocolate, do not recline until 2 hours after eating If no relief, call provider
Nausea Vitamin B6 (25 mg, 3 times per day) and Unisom (1/2 tablet, 3 times per day), Ginger Tea, Bio Bands, Peppermint, Ginger candy, (eat every 2 hours) If you experience persistent vomiting, decrease in weight, decrease in urine output, call provider
Yeast Infection 3–7 day Monistat vaginal cream Call if no relief
