Preparing for Childbirth
Preparing for the birth can be very overwhelming. It is easy to forget important steps, especially if this is your first baby. This checklist is designed to help you think of completing these important steps BEFORE your baby arrives.
- Understand what to expect during your pregnancy, labor and delivery
- Educate yourself on the different birthing options and discuss them with your physician or midwife. (Write questions down in between visits!)
- Sign up for Childbirth Preparation classes—We encourage these!!
- Before you reach your eighth month of pregnancy, you and your significant other need to choose a physician or nurse practitioner to care for your new baby. Your obstetrician or midwife can care for only you, not the baby. Ask friends and family about their physicians or practitioners, check your health insurance list to see who is part of your plan and then meet with them before having your baby to see what their philosophy is and how they practice medicine.
- Consider your feeding options—We encourage breast feeding! It is best for you and for your baby.
- Make a list of important phone numbers and people that you and your significant other want to call after the baby is born.
- Purchase baby supplies.
- Purchase breast feeding supplies if you choose to breast feed.
- Purchase a car seat and familiarize yourself with how it is adjusted and how it is belted into the car.
- Pack your bag! Please do this before 36 weeks to make sure you are well prepared!
